Picture Book Presentation Information

1. Pre-reading Q&A - this is used to create story prediction and interest so that students have a foundation for understanding the story.

2. Story Reading - Sarah reads the story while (if possible) it is also displayed on a screen for students to see each page as she reads.

3. Writing to Publishing presentation - Sarah uses a PowerPoint to show students her process of writing, editing, scene arrangement, illustrating, creating final files, and publishing her stories.

4. Post-presentation Q&A - this is an opportunity for students to ask questions and to comment their thoughts.

5. Autographing (optional) - this is the last part (or can be the beginning part) when Sarah signs purchased books for students and/or takes photos with students.

Creative Writing Workshops Information

Sarah's model of writing workshops is adapted from her Columbia University study experience.

Age Range: 8 years and older (3rd grade and up)

Student must be able to write at least 1 page (250 - 300 words) on a single topic.

For an effective workshop experience, it is recommended that there are at least 3-4 sessions with each session taking place on a consecutive day.

Session 1: Sarah teaches students the building blocks of a story which students then use to create their own story template/outline. For homework, students will be required to write their 1st draft. If time permits, students will begin writing their 1st drafts in class.

Session 2: Sarah teaches writing techniques for students to use to improve upon their 1st drafts. Additionally, Sarah reads each student's 1st draft and gives personalized feedback. For homework, students will be required to write their 2nd draft using feedback and writing techniques taught. If time permits, students will begin writing their 2nd drafts in class.

Session 3: Sarah teaches an additional set of writing techniques for students to use to improve upon their 2nd drafts. Additionally, Sarah reads each student's 2nd draft and gives personalized feedback. For homework, students will be required to write their 3rd draft using feedback and writing techniques taught. If time permits, students will begin writing their 3rd drafts in class.

Session 4: Sarah closes off the workshop by addressing any final questions students may have. She has volunteers read their 3rd drafts. She also gives personalized feedback to each student on their 3rd draft. This session can replace Session 3 if necessary, but students will only have the time to write 2 drafts instead of 3.
